Gašo Knežević (1953-2014)

Dr. Gašo Knežević, Professor at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law and President of the Belgrade Arbitration Center, passed away in Belgrade on 14 March 2014. Professor Knežević spent most of his professional career teaching Private International Lawat the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law. Before embarking on his academic career, Professor Knežević worked at the District Commercial Court in Belgrade and was admitted to the bar. He returned to private practice once more in 2000, during his provisional absence from the University  – he resigned from his post to protest political influence in hiring and firing University teaching staff.

Professor Knežević served and acted in a number of other capacities – he acted as arbitrator and president of the Foreign Trade Court of Arbitration attached to the Serbian Chamber of Commerce for many years, represented Serbiabefore the Arbitration Court at the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, served as minister of education and sport in the period 2000-2004, was a member of the Parliament and Advisory Council for Legal Matters of the President of the Republic, served as Chief Legal Advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and High Representative of Serbia to the Mixed Standing Committee for Succession of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, member of the State Council for Private International Law and numerous working groups for drafting legislative acts in the fields of his expertise, examiner in the Bar Exam Jury and member of the National Council for High Education.

Professor Knežević contributed profoundly to the development of theory and practice of Serbian and Yugoslav private international law, arbitration law, foreign direct investment law and alternative dispute resolution. He will be dearly remembered by his colleagues and students for his competence, erudition, moral and professional persistence and consistency, unique style of work, well-measured approach and modesty.
